How to manage money as a couple without fighting about it

The HeyCents team · · 1 min read

Money is one of the biggest sources of tension in a relationship, rarely because of the amount, but because of missing agreements and clarity. These steps help sort it out.

1. Talk about money when you're not fighting

Schedule a calm conversation, not one in the middle of an argument about a purchase. Talk about income, debts, goals and each person's habits, without judging.

2. Decide how to split expenses

  • Equally, if you earn about the same.
  • In proportion to each person's income, if there is a big difference.
  • A joint pot for shared costs and personal money for individual wants.

There's no single right formula: the best one is the one you both feel is fair.

3. Have goals in common

A trip, an emergency fund, a down payment. Giving a name and an amount to what you want to achieve together turns saving into a shared project instead of a restriction.

4. One place where both see the same information

Most money arguments start because each person has a different version of what was spent. If you both log in the same place, the conversation moves from "you spent" to "let's see how we're doing".

Tip: Once a week, ten minutes reviewing together how much you've spent. That's enough to avoid surprises.

With HeyCents

HeyCents's shared wallet is designed for couples: two people, each from their own phone, log into the same wallet. You can say an expense in one sentence and both of you see it in the same wallet, with no screenshots to send or notes to compare.
